BuddyPress is an open-source social networking software package that Automattic has had since 2008. It is a plugin that can be installed on WordPress to convert WordPress to a social networking platform.
BuddyPress is designed to allow schools, companies, sports teams or any other niche community to launch their own social networks or communication tools.
BuddyPress inherits and extends integrated functional elements of the WordPress engine, including themes, plugins, and widgets. Because wordpress is built on it, the same primary technologies are written using PHP and MySQL.
